Hello everyone,
Well.......It's safe to come over to my blog. I got my computer back late this morning and had to upgrade my anti-virus and pay my IT tech to get rid of this "crap" that I picked up. And that REALLY made me mad as the money was for my garden seeds and seed starting supplies. This really PO's me totally.
I thought I would just mention what my IT tech told me: The "new" thing for hackers and other perverted masses to do now is to infect innocent sites, like gardening sites, coupon sites for grocery store coupons, and other totally innocent web sites. The other thing he told me was that it seems to be affecting more women as they surf these sites. He mentioned that these hackers are from overseas. After he told me this, I was really po'd. It seems now that you cannot even look or do anything anymore without worrying about picking up crap like a sexually transmitted disease. Only you are the innocent one and it makes you become the guilty one.
I carry Avast anti virus on this computer, and it really works for me. My IT tech installed it for free off of their web site, but since this, I had to upgrade to a more stronger wall and it cost, but it is worth it to me. But still, it dipped into my seed money.
Anyway, I just wanted to tell all that its safe to come over to play.
Its very cold here, got 8' of snow during the night and this morning, my snow guy was over very early to scoop my walks and drive and I got out to salt the walks before I left to get the computer. So, since I couldn't get out, I baked another Banana cake from Glenda at Living and Gardening in the Ozarks, (its on my blog list). Her cake is out of this world, and it did not last very long here. It bakes beautifully and is so very moist. The frosting is to die for.
I am going to put pork chops on tonight for my parent's and my dinner, nothing fancy, and maybe salad. I also have some potatoes that I need to bake or steam to make potato salad, and use them up before they start sprouting, in fact, I think that some are.
Anyway, a very non-productive day, we are supposed to have warmer weather by the weekend, if so, I am going to try to set up my greenhouse plastic and start my lettuces and greens. I feel like a broken record.
Anyway, please take care all, and wishing all of you a wonderful and productive week.
This new home is the book, the pages are the days to come and my life are the words.

I have a case of the "bugs"
I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be down for a few days. I picked up a virus on my desktop computer and I am plenty mad about it.
I will warn everyone not to go to ANY coupon sites like for grocery or anything for that reason. That is where I got this garbage. And it shut everything down. My IT tech told me that the hot thing now is for hackers to get on to these innocent sites and put every imaginable thing they can lay their hands on. This stuff is serious as you can just go to the site and this crap will latch on to you and place spyware and malware and all sorts of crap on your system. Just don't go to these sites, as this is the new frontier where they are playing now. And to top it off, the viruses are hidden in a folder sometimes called "research" folders, or files, and will bury deep within your computer.
I am using my ex's laptop so to warn some of you about this. I even have pretty strong anti-virus and it didn't stop this as this is the new thing in destruction to everyone.
So, please be careful everyone and I will return as soon as I can.
Take care all.

Herb seedlings
Hello everyone,
Well, I couldn't take it anymore. About a week ago, I dug out my herb seeds and started 2 oblong planters of different herbs just to see something green. I have a warm spot in my hot water heater closet and they are doing quite well. I brought them out the past few days to get some sun in the south window. We didn't get the snow but boy did we get the cold, and I mean bitter cold, Tuesday morning, it was -11* below, with a windchill of -35* below. Today, it was -1* below, but the windchill were still up around -20 to -25* below. We still have some wind and though the sun is shining, it is very cold. I am ready for spring.....
It sounds like we will start getting some breaks in the weather where I can get up my greenhouse plastic and wrap my large blue containers for some lettuces and some mesclun. I was asked what type of greens I grow, and I splurge on some expensive European seeds that take cold weather. I buy from two companies: one is www.kitchengardenseeds.com
and the other is: www.cooksgarden.com The seeds are pricey, but I like some unusual greens and salad makin's and I enjoy them very much so I spend a little extra for me, and my salad bowl. In the Cooks garden catalog, they have seeds are based on what works in low level winter sun and cold, and then some that are spring and summer. I also will plant Spinach and have baby spinach, a few years ago, my spinach I planted went through -35 to -45 below wind chills just being covered with two heavy old comforters over the top of the greenhouse plastic and when I had a break in the weather in the first week of February, I took the covers off, and my spinach rode through the cold with flying colors, and it was so sweet and tender. It was worth the fretting over to keep it covered. The spinach I planted was Bloomsdale Long Standing, a savoy leafed spinach.
Other than the cold, there has not been anything going on except the bills, and cabin fever. Our temps will level out here for a few days and then cold again over the weekend, and then a warm up. We'll see.
Anyway, I wish everyone a wonderful rest of the week, and a full and productive weekend. Send me some warm air, which I am sure the eastern part of the country is wanting as well. They also need some snow gone. I sure the groundhog will do his best. But, be glad of the moisture that has been received for every one's gardens and flowers.
Take care all.

WOW
I came in from outside and just heard on the radio that it is 60*. It is a literal heat wave here, break out the bikini's and the beach towel. Better enjoy it today as it is supposed to start cooling down to 40's tomorrow, 30's on Sunday, and then the single digits and below zero at night Monday and Tuesday. Oh well.
I tried to get to my legs on my cold frames, but just can't break the grip of ice on the north side. So.....what I am going to do is wait until we get a break in the cold, and then cut me a piece of greenhouse plastic and just cover my garden buckets that I have on the south side, (see photos to the left), and I will just wrap and make a tent over the buckets and use tomato cages to hold up the plastic and this will get things warmed up and I should be able to plant sometime in the first few weeks of February, which is generally what I do anyway, I was just wanting a better set up. My buckets are warm and are very loose in the soil so I can start mixing my worm poop, and fresh compost in.
As you may be able to see, I do not have a whole lot of room around my place. Where the car port is on the very left corner of the top photo, is my lot line. I have about a 5 ft wide space and then a 76 ft length to the back. I will be putting up cattle panels to fence off everything. I use the blue buckets to grow my peppers and tomatoes and cucumbers, and then use the fence for beans, and more cucumbers to ramble on. When its covered it looks pretty good. You can also tell how close we all are around here, so you can see how things can get tense real quick. My north side I have fenced off and I use this for more tomatoes and then my summer lettuces and greens and onions and what ever else I can squeeze in. I plant flowers around also for color. My soil here is very clay based and its too hard to dig so I use the buckets and other containers to grow stuff in. Where ever I can put a pot, I put a plant. I am going to have it looking like a jungle again this year.
Well, thought I'd post that I couldn't get to the frames and legs, told you, best laid plans.

More winter and snow and cold, oh my
Good Morning everyone,
I hope that all of you are having a good start to the day, and a great start to the weekend. I will see if I can get a few things done, but as usual, something gets in the road and gives you a detour. Yes, best laid plans.
Sounds like we are going to get another round of winter here again. For the last 2 days, it has been, for us, just beautiful, in the high 40's and yesterday, (Thursday) it was 54*, WOW, heat wave for us. Today, about the same, Mid to high 50's and warm.
I tried to get to my cold frames under the porch, and it is a mud hole, and some things are encased in ice/ I don't know if I can take one of my weed diggers and chip out some of it, and at least get the shorter legs. My frame is out at least, but it is tall and I use it when I start my seedlings so I can stand up in it and it gives me more room for shelving. I want the shorter legs so I can cover my plastic buckets to warm up and start my greens. Again, should of done this, during the fall, but I was just plain damn lazy and was trying to can tomatoes and clean up the garden at the same time.
I can't remember if I mentioned what I use for cold frames at the present time. I use the cheap, soft side canopy that are available for covering cars and other stuff. I have several, and they (the covers) did not survive the hail and the wicked thunderstorms we get here, but the frames are sturdy enough for me and gardening. I have also salvaged some from alleys from the garbage bins, (yep, I am a dumpster diver), and then I cover them with greenhouse plastic and anchor them down with dead men, (big screw in lag bolts) in the ground to hold them down and use some 2x4's for support from spring snow. It works for me since I can't afford my dream greenhouse I want. So I will attempt this again today to get the legs out and get it set up. I am desperate for fresh lettuces and mesclun and radishes, you get the picture. I will try to see if I can get some photos of the frames, I have a small digital camera, but the batteries are low so I'll see what I can get.
I am going to try to muster an order of seeds, before its possibly too late. Sounds like a lot of people will garden this year, unless they outlaw things. I have thoughts on this, and I may do a post about it. I am being told several different versions about the Food Safety Bill and that it will differ with each state, from what I have been told. This is from our Farm Bureau and a new politician that is running for our state for US Senate. So when I get more info on this, I will post on this as this could be a hot button issue, and I don't want to mention things until I get it from the horse's mouth.
Well, other than that, I will be outside today a little enjoying the January warmth we will get, but it will be short lived. Then I will tackle the inside stuff, and get a little relief from cabin fever.
I wish all of you a wonderful weekend. Where ever you are.

Round 2 snow maker
Good Morning everyone,
Thank you for your kind comments about Miss Nubbins. She is my little star and one of my favorites, though I love my kitties equally, she has a very special place in my heart.
I had some questions about how she got to that point, and to tell you the truth, Doc and I weren't real sure. Doc had an general idea, as when she was brought in, she smelled heavily of diesel fuel, and had dirty motor oil all over her coat. She also came off of a ranch around the area, and when Doc did an inspection of the legs that were sliced, there was some metal filings on the bone, and he was piecing a theory that the trucks were brought in from the ranch, put in the barn, the engines were hot and this happened in Dec of 2000 and if I remember it was running -30 below wind chills so she went up into the engines to get warm. This happens quite a bit, more than people want to know.
I will assure you she was a mess when I got her, and she was very, very tiny, which is why she survived, Doc said, she was bounced around in the engine block like a ping pong ball when the engine was started up. Doc's guess was she was up on the radiator on the top of the engine and she bounced from the top to the fan. It was also very cold and the cold stopped the blood from flowing and helped until she was placed with Doc. I think I will stop there.
Well, sounds like snow again here. And for my readers in the south, it sounds like it will migrate down your way like the last batch we had here Wednesday. Only this time, we are to get the 30+ mph winds which make it cold and miserable, and more like a blizzard. So more cabin fever this weekend. I have some of my seed order made out, I am trying to try a few new tomatoes, and some peppers, what I am dealing with is the fact of time and my physically able to do all of this. I don't want to give up gardening, I would be a complete stark raving idiot, but I do know that this year, I am having much more back pain and I now have a hip that is really giving me fits, and doctor mentioned that I am way too young to have a hip surgery, and it wouldn't even be attempted unless I fell and broke the hip which would put me out of commission. But I want to be able to garden and handle things. That is why I am working on the idea of a more accessible raised beds using stair stringers to elevate some of the beds up so I can get to them without bending. I do know that I can only afford to build a few, so these I am planning will be for greens and spinach and will be designed as to make a simple cold frame or hoop house and be able to cover them with greenhouse plastic. Then next year I will tackle more and a little different for tomato and peppers and other sturdy garden plants. My plan is simply to built with comfort in mind and more efficient with water, possibly able to hook up a type of drip irrigation system so I just have to have a hose hook up and then just turn on the hose. I also want to build them so they can be taken apart if I ever move this trailer someday. Ah, best laid plans of mice and men.
Really other than the snow and cold going on, there really isn't much. I have some people that moved into the trailer to the south of me, and I don't think that they will stay very long. They were moved in only 2 days and on Sunday, I could hear them fighting clear through my house, though we are very close, so I knew that this would end up doing something later and I was right. Sunday evening about 5 pm, they were outside screaming with several other people, and I do not put up with any of that at all, I'm not going to listen to the words and screaming that I heard. So, I called the cops and it didn't take very long for a unit to get over there, and after that, they don't even make a sound. They are in and out and gone in very short order. We'll see how this goes. We have 3 new bunches and they are all kids, so, that should tell you how that will go. Usually not very good, especially when it gets warm and the party weather gets going. Time will tell, and I will give them the benefit of a doubt.
Well, I guess I had better get going, Need to run some errands before it SNOWS again. Need to put some gas in the car, which I have heart failure when I do. I only put in about $20 worth, as I don't drive too much. And sometimes I just use the Handi-bus if I don't have too much to do.
I wish everyone a wonderful weekend, enjoy and we will talk to all later.
